6 Budget Friendly Activities for the 6 Weeks Summer Holiday

23rd July, 2024

The summer holidays are fantastic bonding time, but sometimes thinking of things to do that don’t break the bank can be a challenge.

Here are our six top activities for the six weeks! (That’s one a week!)

1.     Picnic in the park.

The UK is home to some truly beautiful spots of nature. Why not take advantage of a sunny day, pack a picnic to keep the cost down and explore. Many parks have parks, areas for sports as well as walking trails to make it a full day out.

2.     Beach day.

This one might take a bit of planning depending on where you live, and will cost you the fuel or train fair. But having a beach day is the ultimate summer activity and can be done at a low cost. Grab a towel, a packed lunch and head to whatever coast is closest. Enjoy building sandcastles together, playing in the surf and collecting shells or exploring the rock pools. Having some beach time will really feel like summer. Beaches like Bournemouth, Whitby and Brighton offer plenty of seaside fun without breaking the bank.

3.     Trip to the museum.

Did you know that many museums in the UK are free entry or have minimal admission fees for children? This can be a great rainy day activity if we’re enjoying a typical British summer. If you don’t mind the train fare, The Natural History Museum and the Science Museum in London are always big hits with the little ones. Or check out what your local museum has on offer.

4.     Outdoor theatre or cinema.

Something a bit different and an evening treat for all the family. During the summer most towns and cities host various outdoor theatre performances and film screenings, these are usually free or low cost. Take some blankets and some snacks and enjoy an evening under the stars.

5.     Stay home with some crafts.

Spend a day at home engaging in creative crafts or simple science experiments. You can find plenty of ideas online using everyday household items. Projects like making slime, building a volcano, or crafting paper mâché sculptures can be both educational and fun.

6.     Go on a Geocaching Adventure.

Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt using GPS devices or smartphones. It’s a great way to explore new areas and keep children engaged as they search for hidden caches. There are many geocaching websites and apps that provide clues and locations for caches around the UK.

Which ones will you try? These activities can be enjoyed by the entire family, not just those in fostering households.
