12th August, 2026
12 August marks International Youth Day, a global awareness day celebrating young people, their achievements, their potential and the important role they play in shaping the future.
Every young person deserves to have someone who believes in them. Positive role models can help children and young people build confidence, develop resilience and feel supported as they navigate life's challenges.
For children in foster care, having trusted adults who provide consistency, encouragement and understanding can make a lasting difference.
Being a positive role model isn't about being perfect. It's about showing young people what kindness, respect, resilience and healthy relationships look like in everyday life.
Foster carers can become important role models simply by being present, listening without judgement and creating a safe and supportive home environment.
Positive role models can:
These everyday behaviours can help children understand what positive relationships look like and give them examples they can carry with them as they grow.
Role modelling often happens in the smallest moments.
Sitting down for dinner together, helping with homework, talking through a difficult day, attending an important event or celebrating a personal achievement can all help a young person feel valued and secure.
Children learn by watching the adults around them. Seeing positive behaviours modelled consistently can help them develop important life skills, build trust and understand how to navigate relationships with others.
For foster carers, this means that the everyday care they provide can have a much greater impact than they may realise.
Positive role models don't just support young people through challenges. They also encourage them to recognise their strengths and become more confident in their own abilities.
This could mean:
When young people are encouraged to try, make mistakes and try again, they can develop a stronger belief in themselves and their ability to overcome challenges.
For many children, simply knowing there is someone they can rely on can make all the difference.
Listening, showing patience and taking an interest in what matters to a young person helps build strong, trusting relationships. Over time, these relationships can provide a sense of safety and belonging.
A conversation after a difficult day, encouragement before something new or simply being there when a young person needs someone to talk to can all send a powerful message:
You matter. I believe in you. I'm here for you.
At Capstone Foster Care, we understand the important role foster carers play in the lives of children and young people.
Fostering is about much more than providing a safe home. It's about helping children develop confidence, build positive relationships and believe in their own potential.
Our foster carers receive ongoing training, guidance and support to help them understand the individual needs and experiences of the children they care for. With the right support around them, foster carers can build the skills and confidence needed to help young people thrive.
You may not always see the impact of the support you give straight away. A word of encouragement, a patient conversation or simply showing up consistently can become something a young person remembers for years to come.
Being a positive role model doesn't require grand gestures. It starts with being there, listening, encouraging and showing young people that they are valued.
This International Youth Day, let's celebrate all the adults who help young people recognise their potential and build brighter futures.
