Being a foster carer is more than just giving a child or young person a place to stay, it’s about providing them with a home, somewhere to feel safe and secure, and supporting them in any way that they need.
Foster carers provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for children and young people who are experiencing difficult or traumatic circumstances. This could be anything from short-term emergency care to long-term placements or respite care. The goal? To help children and young people feel secure, supported, and loved while their long-term future is decided.
For many children and young people, foster carers are the first real experience of what a safe and loving home feels like.
You don’t need to have a specific type of home to foster - but there are some key qualities that make a real difference:
1. Empathy and Patience
Children and young people in care have often experienced trauma, loss, or neglect. A good foster carer understands that behaviour is a form of communication and responds with empathy rather than judgment. Patience is essential.
2. Resilience
Fostering isn’t always easy. There can be challenging behaviours, complex emotions, and difficult transitions. A resilient foster carer can weather these storms while still providing consistency and quality care.
3. Good Communication
Whether it’s working with social workers, teachers, therapists, or the child or young person themselves, clear and compassionate communication is essential. Foster carers are part of a wider support team.
4. Commitment and Flexibility
Foster care isn’t a 9–5 role. The child or young person may need support at any time of the day or during emotionally intense moments. Being able to adapt and remain committed makes a world of difference.
5. A Sense of Humour
Sometimes, laughter really is the best medicine. Being able to find lightness even in hard times helps build trust, connection, and resilience for both the child or young person and the carer.
Foster carers change lives, often in quiet, unspoken ways. For a child or young person in care, having a consistent adult who believes in them, listens to them, and shows up for them can be life-changing.
