If you live in Barnsley and have been thinking of being a foster carer, it may be time to take action. Capstone is an independent agency with an urgent and ongoing requirement for carers in the area. We have a contract with the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to provide fostering services to the children and young people taken into care by the local authority.
It is one of our firm beliefs that children who can be fostered in or near their home community suffer less disruption in the turmoil of being removed from their parents. It would be a great benefit to these children if we had enough homes for them in their own geographic area.
To let you know a little about the type of care that is primarily needed, we can tell you that most of the youngsters we support are over 5 years old. Many times, because the youngsters may have been in an abusive or violent environment for some time, maybe years, they may have challenging behaviours.
There is more. Often, young people who are taken into care are not alone. When sibling groups are taken into care, all efforts are made to keep the little family group together. It is difficult enough to be removed from a parent or parents and the family home. Being separated from siblings only compounds the issue.
Another situation that we encounter a great deal are mother and babies who need foster care. In these parent and child placements, mum often needs a bit of help and guidance to look after her baby. To do this we offer specialised training.

If you are considering becoming a carer, you must have room in your house or flat for a spare bedroom. If you have room for sibling groups, please contact our Capstone team. Large sibling groups, that is, those over 3 members, are hard to place because of the space requirement.
When you make contact with our local office, our team will be on hand to offer you support 24/7 if you decide to join Capstone. The support begins with your initial expression of interest and we will work with you through the application assessment process.
Our carers regularly attend support groups, training and coffee mornings. We think it’s important to get foster carers together so we can all help each other and share experiences.
Our expert social workers are available 24/7. We have trained professionals offering varied training on an ongoing basis. Our in-house education team is available to support young people with tuition and teaching. As well, we can provide therapeutic services for young people who have experienced trauma and harm.
As an independent agency, our focus is on providing full-service fostering. This means that we are always expanding our expertise so that our foster parents will be the best trained and best supported available.
For more information, or to start your foster care journey, please do not hesitate to contact Capstone today. You can call us on 0800 012 4004 or by using our online enquiry form. We hope to hear from you soon.
