Can I Foster?
People generally ask themselves “Can I foster?â€, unsure if they can become a foster carer or not.
We understand that fostering a child or young person is a big decision and can be challenging but it can also be immensely rewarding.
The key to fostering a child is high levels of energy coupled with commitment and a passion for working with children and young people. Foster carers are expected to be resilient and enthusiastic, willing and able to battle through the tough times.
Foster carers are expected to have good communication, and team working skills to help meet the needs of those in their care.
Fostering does require high levels of flexibility, understanding and patience.
It is not necessary to have been a parent but personal or professional experience of taking care of or working with children is essential.
Finally, what is most essential is your commitment to providing a safe, caring and supportive environment for children who desperately need stability in their lives.

Want to know if you can foster?
There are many misconceptions about fostering itself, about the children in care and about the carers. People assume that they cannot foster, as they don’t know how compatible they are. You don’t need any specific qualifications. All you need is a spare bedroom and the time and willingness to help a young person in care. You can read more about the requirements here – What do I need to become a foster carer?. You also don’t need any training, as all the essential training will be provided. You’ll have access to a range of support materials, our training and development programmes and your own social worker. You can read more about the training and support here.
