Marcus & Deborah
Our names are Marcus and Deborah and this is our journey in becoming foster carers with Capstone Foster Care.
In June 2016 we decided to make the very important decision to become foster carers. We had considered doing this for some time and felt the time was right to go ahead. I’m about to turn 50 years old and Deborah who is 40 years old. We have a three-bedroom house and so have the space to foster. Deborah and I feel that children and young people in care need someone to help them feel safe, secure and loved in a stable environment for as long as needed as any child would expect.
We were both lucky enough to have parents who were there throughout our childhood, but for whatever reason these vulnerable kids have reached this difficult impasse in their lives. Now we feel we are in a position to help, so why not. On a personal note myself Marcus, I am registered visual impairment which did not stop me from becoming a foster carer, I also have a guide dog named Jeanie, who is part of the family.
The reasons we decided to go with Capstone Foster Care are down to their wonderful staff members whom made us feel so welcomed and relaxed. It just felt so right the moment we stepped through the doors on our first visit to their Birmingham offices. The application process is straight-forward and we were assigned a dedicated social worker who came to visit our home as many times as was needed to discuss the different phases of the application from start to finish. He was also on hand on the phone if we ever needed any questions clarifying. There is also a two-day training course at the main office which covered a broader and deeper understanding behind fostering and many aspects of becoming a foster carer. It was very informative, interesting and rewarding. It was also a chance to meet other people whom wanted to become foster carers and exchange our thoughts as well as phone numbers.
There are a range of courses we intend to do in order to progress our parenting skills. Capstone have other offices, one of which is situated locally to us where we can pop into whenever we need. On the final day where we attended our Panel Presentation it could not have gone smoother. All of the staff and Panel were so warm and welcoming, it made us feel totally relaxed. We could not recommend Capstone Foster Care highly enough and we know we will be well supported throughout our future journey together.
