Anti-Bullying Week 2021: One Kind Word

19th November, 2021

It’s anti-bullying week this week and our team in the South East have put together some great information and resources for us to share.

Happiness is something that we are all striving for. This has been especially magnified during the pandemic where many of our lives and children’s lives have changed in different ways. That’s why this year, ‘One kind word’ is the main theme for Anti-Bullying Week. We can often underestimate the power that one kind word can have for someone who is having a difficult time and how it can change their day/week.

Click here for a short video on the importance of kindness and happiness.

Dealing with bullying can bring challenges and barriers many of us may not be aware of or understand how to appropriately manage.

STOP.SPEAK.SUPPORT is a project by the NSPCC where they discuss cyberbullying with a panel of young people. Below is a quote from a young person in counselling:

“Every day I wake up scared to go to school, scared about the comments people will make and scared about walking home. Then I get in and log onto my social networking site and there are horrible messages everywhere. It’s like there’s no escaping the bullies. I’m struggling to cope…. I can’t go on like this.”

A pack is available for download here that is aimed at 11-16 year-olds who are witnessing online bullying. The pack helps young people to think about what they might do to help stop the spread of cyberbullying and how they can respond to it.

Did you know that 1 in 5 internet users in the UK are children? It can be really difficult to keep children safe online if you don’t know where to begin. The NSPCC has some great resources to help start that conversation and also reviews of the different apps that children and young people might be using. Find out more here.

You can a wealth of useful information around bullying, cyber bullying, signs to look out for and extra help for supporting children and young people here.

Here are some helpful books for young children about bullying, compassion and kindness:

I Walk With Vanessa

This pictures-only storybook beautifully illustrates how one person’s kindness can inspire an entire community to stand up to bullying.

You Me and Empathy

A very helpful book for teaching children about empathy, feelings, kindness, compassion, tolerance, and recognizing bullying behaviors.

My Secret Bully

Monica and Katie have been friends since kindergarten, but the older they get, the more confusing the friendship becomes. Monica can’t understand why Katie has started to exclude her and call her names.
