Remand Fostering

When young people and children find themselves in trouble with the law and awaiting trial they are often faced with being imprisoned in custody. A preferred alternative is a foster care arrangement, which can offer a more supportive, nurturing environment.

Remand fostering is where foster carers work with youth offending teams and accompany a youngster back and forth from court. It’s not usually a long-term measure and can be arranged at very short notice.

This is a very challenging type of foster care that requires a lot of compassion, patience and support. The home environment of a remand foster carer must offer stability and security. This can often lead to a significant difference in a young person’s behavior, reducing the risks of re-offending whilst in care. This measure also avoids the damaging effects of placing young people and children in custody.

If you are someone who can turn around the lives of vulnerable young people in need of support at a difficult time in their lives, we want to hear from you. Although we welcome all interest for a remand fostering role, many of the people who work in remand fostering are accustomed to supporting young people to change their lives such as members of the police force, sports coaches, youth workers, social workers, probation officers, support workers and prison officers.
