If you are interested in becoming a foster parent and don’t know where to start, here is some basic information that will set you on the path towards being accepted as a foster carer.

  • You need to have at least one spare room.
  • Your health must be good.
  • Anyone over the age of 18 in your household must pass a DBS check.

These are the basic requirements. Beyond that, it helps if you are at least 21 but under certain circumstances, being 21 years old will suffice. You can be single, married, or living common-law. Gays and lesbians are encouraged to apply. So are single men or women. Being a foster parent requires energy. It also helps to have common sense and a natural desire to work with children. However, if you have no experience working with children, then that is not actually a problem.

Why choose CapstoneFostering in Lewisham and Croydon

Capstone has the support, training, and resources to help you gain the knowledge you need. We are an independent fostering agency and are able to combine the resources and skilfulness of a large agency with the personal support that carers must have.

We make every attempt to find a placement for a child in care that matches the child’s ethnic background and culture. In Lewisham and Croydon, this is a challenge as the area is culturally and ethnically diverse. We need foster carers with diverse backgrounds and cultures. In particular, we need Sikh, Muslim, Black, African, Caribbean, Hindu, and Christian foster carers. Recently, there are more Bangladeshi, Indian and Muslim children and young people being taken into care.

Capstone puts the interests of the children and young people in care first. It is one of our tenets that children should be placed in a safe and caring environment that matches their cultural identity. It is difficult enough to be removed from their families without also being removed from their culture and traditions.

If you have room in your home and a desire to help change the life of a child for the better, if you have energy and good health, you are needed.

Once it is determined that you have the room for a foster child, we can begin the assessment process. It could take up to six months during which you will be trained, your health assessed, your family interviewed, and you will learn what financial arrangements we offer.
