What we achieve
One of the very exciting aspects of fostering are those times when you can see how a child or young person is changing and is beginning to attach to their carers. Children come into care in a panic or angry or deeply anxious – or a mixture of all three.
Josh (not his real name), aged six, drew the self-portrait opposite in the first couple of weeks into placement. He had been very hurt and had been told by his mum that he was the baddie in the family, so he saw himself as an alien who needed to carry a weapon to protect himself from further hurt.
Two-and-a-half years on and he drew another self-portrait. This, more than anything we can write, shows you what we achieve through the quality of care that we promote through our carers and the team that supports them.
