Fostering in Barking & Dagenham
Capstone Foster Care is an active independent fostering agency in East London that has contracted with the local authority of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council. Local authorities are the entities that assess whether children and young people need to be taken into care. In order to arrange for the most positive home for a foster child, they need to have a strong team of foster carers.
This is where agencies such as Capstone can help. To enable us to expand our family of carers, we are looking to recruit people like you in Barking and Dagenham. There are two things that we ask of you to begin with. One, that you have a positive attitude combined with energy and determination, and two, that you have a spare bedroom. It is important for each looked after child to have his or her own bedroom with enough space for a bed, desk, and chest of drawers.
We provide support, training, and a generous allowance to our carers. If you have the room and the will, the next step is to get in touch with us. The application process starts by having one of our social workers appointed as your main point of contact. This person will work with you during the assessment process. He or she will visit your home several times over a period of a couple of months to become acquainted with you and your family.
There is a mandatory two-day ‘Skills to Foster’ training course where you learn about being a carer and you meet other applicants. At the end of the assessment period, the social worker prepares a written report describing you, your family, your skills, and your previous experiences. This report provides a recommendation to our fostering panel about your suitability to be a carer.
When the panel meets to make its decision, you are also invited to attend the meeting. The panel makes its recommendation to our agency decision maker, who makes the final decision to approve you. When approved, you attend an induction training session and are allocated a supervising social worker who is there to help and support you throughout your career.
That is the process. As for the young people who you will be caring for, our goal is to provide them with the love, care, and security that will allow them to thrive in life and have positive outcomes as adults. Specifically, in your area, we are looking for foster carers who have more than one spare bedroom because we strive to place sibling groups together.
Ofsted has given us an overall rating of ‘Good,’ praising us for going the extra mile for our carers and having positive outcomes for the children in terms of their education, health, and maintaining contact. It is this ability to provide a bright future to a young person or persons that makes our job so fulfilling and delightful.
Our recruitment efforts are ongoing, so if you have ever thought about becoming a carer, call us on 0800 012 4004 or fill out an enquiry form. We would really appreciate hearing from you.
